|WIC Questions: Shelby Mitchell
Managing Editor, The Concrete Producer
I worked in Marketing & Communications for a concrete producer for almost 10 years before coming to Hanley Wood to write about the industry.
What did you do before getting involved in the concrete industry?
Marketing for a stainless steel company, and non-profit organizations.
How did you get the position you currently have?
I met the Editor-in-Chief of The Concrete Producer at an industry awards event, and reconnected with him when my job moved to Houston (and I stayed in Chicago). I was originally interested in Marketing work, but decided to try something new when I learned the editorial position was available.
What is your favorite aspect of your position?
I enjoy getting a broader view of the concrete and construction industries, and learning about the new and creative things people are doing.
What associations are you involved with?
WICA, American Concrete Institute, and Construction Writers Association
What are your goals and ambitions for your position?
To help improve the concrete and masonry industries by sharing information about new and interesting developments, and helping people make connections that bring their work to a higher level.
What types of changes would you like to see in the industry?
I’d like to see more producers and contractors embracing new technologies and environmentally friendly practices because it’s the right thing to do – not just after they are required to by law.
What is your advice for other women just entering the concrete industry?
Try to learn about as many aspects of the business as possible. Not only does it give you a better understanding of the practices and products, but it will help you figure out what areas you are most interested in pursuing in the long-run.
